What is CanSkate
CanSkate is Skate Canada’s flagship learn-to-skate program designed for beginners of all ages. When you sign up for CanSkate (Stage 1 – 6) you will be in a program that focuses on fun, participation, and basic skill development. Skaters are introduced to the six fundamental skating movements: forward skating, backward skating, stop, turn, spin, and jump, and earn badges and other incentives as they complete each Stage.
Lessons are given in a group format and led by an NCCP-certified professional coach. Professional coaches are assisted by trained Program Assistants. Skaters progress at their own rate and coaches make sessions active using teaching aids, music, and a wide variety of activities that create a fun environment and promote learning. CanSkate is the feeder program to all other Skate Canada Skating Programs.
What to bring:
Skaters must have their own skates, rentals are NOT available
Mitts/gloves
CSA Approved mandatory for all CanSkaters until Stage 6
Should be warm and comfortable and allow for easy movement.
Why sign up for CanSkate?
CanSkate is Canada’s only national learn-to-skate program and is recognized as one of the best programs of its type in the world! It was developed by experts to teach the fundamentals of skating in a progressive and sequential manner.
When you/your child registers for a CanSkate program at your local Skate Canada club, you also become a member of Skate Canada, the national sport governing body for figure skating in Canada. Membership benefits in the CanSkate program can include: Stickers, tattoos, colouring sheets, parent information sheets, progress updates and report cards, special CanSkate events and club functions, CanSkater of the Year award program, opportunity to be talent-scouted and the opportunity to participate in a positive healthy lifestyle activity.
PreCanSkate
Are you 3 and want to start skating? Well, this season Inlet welcomes all children 3-5 years old to join in on the FUN. Sessions will run at the sam time as CanSkate but geared for younger students and skills on circuits will be adapted accordingly.
What comes after CanSkate?
Skaters have different options as to where to go after they have completed the Canskate Program. If they are interested in figure Skating you can discuss with our director of moving on to Skating Academy or our Teen/Adult StarSkate Program, this is always done by invitation when coaches feel the skater is ready but feel free to talk to us about it if your child is eager.
If they are more focused on Hockey/Ringette fundamentals then the PrePower or CanPower Programs is the next step.
