Lessons are given in a group format and led by an NCCP certified professional coach.
Professional coaches are assisted by trained Program Assistants. CanSkate is the feeder program to all other Skate Canada Skating Programs.
What to bring:
- Skaters must have their own skates, rentals are not available
- Knitted type mitts/gloves
- Hockey (CSA Approved) mandatory for all CanSkaters until Stage 5
- Should be warm and comfortable and allow for easy movement.
Why sign up for CanSkate?
CanSkate is Canada’s only national learn-to-skate program and is recognized as one of the best programs of its type in the world! It was developed by experts to teach the fundamentals of skating in a progressive and sequential manner.
When you/your child registers for a CanSkate program at your local Skate Canada club, you also become a member of Skate Canada, the national sport governing body for figure skating in Canada. Membership benefits in the CanSkate program can include:
– Stickers, tattoos, colouring sheets, parent information sheets, progress updates and report cards, special CanSkate events and club functions, CanSkater of the Year award program, opportunity to be talent-scouted and the opportunity to participate in a positive healthy lifestyle activity.
PreCanSkate
Are you 3 and want to start skating? Well, this season Inlet welcomes all children 3-5 years old to join in on the FUN. Sessions will run at the sam time as CanSkate but geared for younger students.
What comes after CanSkate?
Skaters have different options as to where to go after they have completed the Canskate Program. If they are interested in figure Skating they can move on to Skating Academy or our Teen/Adult StarSkate Program.
If they are more focused on Hockey/Ringette fundamentals then the PrePower or CanPower Programs is the next step.
CanPowerSkate

CanPowerSkate is an action-packed, high energy instructional power skating program geared to Hockey
and Ringette skaters that focuses on:
- Balance, Power, Agility, Speed and Endurance
- Skills, techniques and conditioning drills are taught in a progressive format that emphasizes how the skills apply to game situations.
CanPowerSkate provides an alternative to figure skating and is an excellent complement for those athletes playing on hockey or ringette teams. Its unique skill award program provides incentives and motivation for skaters to continue to achieve.

CanPowerSkate is geared to skaters aged approximately six or older who already have basic forward and backward skating skills (they must be able to skate the length of the rink using alternate strides) and are able to stop on command without use of the boards. For safety reasons participants should wear full hockey/ringette equipment that is CSA approved.
This program is taught by certified CanPowerSkate Instructors who are members of Skate Canada and some of Inlet’s CanPower Instructors also have a hockey background.

STARSkate/Competitive Skate
The STARSkate program stands for Skills, Tests, Achievement, and Recognition. Once finished with the CanSkate and Early Figure skating programs, most parents of future figure skaters are confused as to the next step to take. The Skate Canada STARSkate program offers opportunities for skaters to develop basic figure skating skills with the option of taking Skate Canada Tests and entering competitions. At this point the skater will need to select a coach of their choice and begin private or semi-private lessons.

STARSkate Test Program:
This program allows the skater to develop basic skating skills in the disciplines of Skating Skills, Free Skating, Dance and Artistic. Each discipline is grouped into Primary, Intermediate and Senior Level Tests. There are 6 levels within the Skating Skills program; 6 Free Skating tests; 7 levels of tests within the Dance Test program and 4 levels within Artistic.
It takes years of dedication and hard work to achieve these various levels, but it is both a challenging and gratifying experience for the skater.
STARSkate Competitive Program:
Competitive Skate is a separate stream that incorporates a series of tests and other training opportunities to help competitive skaters with potential to advance from provincial to national championships and beyond. Skaters can participate in the Competitive Test program for Singles, Pairs, or Ice Dancing and by doing so can become eligible to compete in events referred to as Qualifying Events. Skaters take test specific to the discipline in which they wish to compete. As an incentive, skaters passing competitive tests are granted equivalencies in the Skate Canada Test Program.
Teen/Adult STARSkate

A fun group based session for all levels of teens and adults wanting to learn to skate
recreationally or to pursue figure skating skills.
There is a 15-30-minute group lesson included. Badges & report cards are given at the end of each set. There is also the opportunity for private lessons when available. This is also a great session for former figure skaters wishing to skate for fitness and fun.
